There is a helper website BirthdayFB which automatically posts birthday wishes on the walls of your Facebook friends. There are few other apps which do the same thing but this website does not let your friends know that you are relying on a third-party tool to remember their birthdays.
When you visit the website, it shows how it works. You need to connect with the service with your facebook account and allow the app to access the data of your account.
Then it will show the list of upcoming birthdays. Here click on the tiny dropdown just in front of the profile pics and set the birthday message for a friend on his birthday.
